It has recently come to our attention that scammers are using a COVID-19 themed scam to install malicious software on your device.
Scamwatch have been receiving reports that scam texts are being sent to members of the public, with the sender listed as ‘GOV’. The text asks you to click to find out where you can get tested for COVID-19 and you a required to click a link that will send you to a website.
These texts are not legitimate, and if clicked on, may install malicious software onto your device, designed to steal your banking details.
How do I stay safe from COVID-19?
If you receive this text, please delete it immediately. If you’re unsure of whether or not it’s a legitimate link, hover over that link to see the actual web address it will take you to (usually shown at the bottom of the browser window). If you do not recognise or trust the address, try searching for relevant key terms in a web browser. This way you can find the article, video or webpage without directly clicking on the suspicious link.
If you’re still unsure, talk through the suspicious message with a friend or family member, or check its legitimacy by contacting the relevant business or organisation (using contact details sourced from the official company website). Also please note that, as of today, the Government have not sent out any text messages regarding COVID-19 safety.
