Microsoft Foundry brings AI models, agents, business data, voice and governance into one platform. For organisations already using Microsoft 365 and Azure, it provides a clearer path from AI experimentation to secure, practical applications.

Artificial intelligence is moving beyond individual chat tools. Businesses are now looking at AI applications and agents that can find information, complete defined tasks and work securely within existing systems.

Microsoft Foundry, previously known as Azure AI Foundry, is Microsoft’s unified platform for building, deploying and governing those solutions. It brings models, tools, hosting, knowledge connections and enterprise controls together within the Microsoft cloud environment.

What has changed?

Microsoft has expanded Foundry considerably. Organisations can choose from a broad catalogue of AI models from Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral and other providers, rather than relying on a single model for every task.

Foundry Agent Service also provides managed hosting for AI agents. Agent sessions can operate in isolated environments with their own compute, memory and file access, while development teams can continue using a range of common frameworks.

Memory capabilities are becoming more sophisticated. Agents can retain context within a session, remember approved user preferences and learn procedural information about how recurring work should be completed.

Toolboxes and Foundry IQ are designed to make it easier to connect agents to approved tools and business information. This may reduce the need to build and maintain separate custom retrieval systems for data held in services such as Microsoft 365, Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL and file repositories.

Microsoft has also expanded voice capabilities through Voice Live and made it easier to publish Foundry agents into Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot. This means AI tools can be delivered through applications employees already use.

Why this matters for businesses

The significance of Foundry is not any one feature. It is the way the platform brings AI development, security, identity, access control and monitoring into a more unified environment.

For businesses already invested in Microsoft 365 and Azure, this can reduce infrastructure complexity and make it easier to develop AI solutions that use existing permissions and business information. It also gives IT teams a more structured way to manage who can access an agent, what information it can use and how its performance is monitored.

Important considerations

Foundry does not remove the need for careful planning. Some capabilities remain in preview and may change. Model usage, hosting, storage and compute costs must also be understood before a client proposal is developed.

Australian organisations should confirm data residency, sovereignty and the processing arrangements of every model, connector and connected service. This is particularly important for regulated industries and any solution that accesses sensitive or confidential information.

Reliability is another consideration. An agent that performs well in a demonstration may respond differently when it encounters incomplete information, unusual requests or future model updates. Production agents need defined human review points, ongoing testing, monitoring and clear escalation processes.

A practical next step

Microsoft Foundry shows where enterprise AI is heading. It is less about creating another chatbot and more about building AI applications that can work with business information, follow defined processes and operate within established security controls.

The best starting point is still a clear business problem. Organisations should identify a high-value, lower-risk process, confirm the data and governance requirements, and test whether AI can deliver a measurable improvement before expanding further.

At Chill IT, we are continuing to assess Microsoft Foundry and its developing capabilities to understand where it can deliver secure, practical and measurable value for our clients.
